I am blessed to be married to a handsome and talented artist who has an extraordinary view on celebrating life. My husband Benjamin Hummel and I will be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary this June and he will also be celebrating 20 years of liver transplant survival!

Now, you have to understand, with his autoimmune disease PSC that he was born with, this is no small accomplishment!

He made this animated video to tell his story of both transplants and his relisting to the liver transplant waiting list. Watch Benjamin Hummel’s Transplant Story.

Life isn’t always easy and pain free… but it is something to cherish.

You can check out his art and support the mission to celebrate life at PaintingForLife.com and Facebook!

Lovey Dovey — In Studio Process

I was looking over some photos and thought that it would be interesting to show more process work on my blog. Above you can see my illustrated art licensing collection centerpiece, Lovey Dovey in progress.

Here were my process notes:

After sketching the desired image for Lovey Dovey in my sketchbook, I re-drew my line work onto the watercolor paper. This picture shows the watercolor/embroidery process at stage 2. You can see the sketch lines on the Arches paper and the palette is mixed to match my embroidery threads, all ready to go. Then, the color is washed on to the paper in steps until the desired depths and forms are developed. Stage 3 is embroidering the art and the final step is to scan and edit the finished piece so it is ready in a digital format for reproduction. See below.

Kreativ Blogger Award nominated by Jen Goode

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Kreativ BloggerI never expected my blog to be nominated for an award. I am honored to accept the Kreativ Blogger award from fellow art licensing artist, internet guru and renowned penguin artist, Jen Goode – jgoode.com.

The Kreativ Blogger award originated in May 2008 in a post by Huldas Verden, a blogger from Norway. This award comes with the following requirements.

The Rules

  1. You must thank the person who has given you the award.
  2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
  3. Link the person who has nominated you for the award.
  4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
  5. Nominate 7 other Kreativ Bloggers.
  6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
  7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs to let them know they have been nominated. (Note – like Jen I used other social media methods to notify each person since it doesn’t make sense to post something this cool as a plain old comment on an unrelated blog post.)

7 things of Interest About Me

  1. I am inspired by Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Red Rose Girls of early American illustration history.
  2. I knew I wanted to be a professional artist since I was 12 years old and took my first college art classes when I was 16.
  3. Hiking to beautiful places and painting en plein air with my little set of watercolors is a great joy.
  4. I am super inspired by many mediums and constantly experiment with new approaches to image making.
  5. I enjoy problem solving, it keeps me up late at night sometimes, but I love the thrill of putting it all together.
  6. Swing dancing is a favorite past time. My first date was Swing dancing with my sweetheart, now husband, Benjamin Hummel. We have no plans to stop dancing any time soon.
  7. I am enthusiastic about meeting new artists and getting them “linked in” with great educational information and resources. I guess this is why I like to teach at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design too!

My Kreativ Blogger Nominations

Drumroll please … I would like to nominate (in alphabetical order) the following artist bloggers for their creative contributions to the arts, licensing and the blogosphere.

LinkedIn Art Licensing Community Reaches 2,000 Members

Cherish Flieder is pleased to announced today that the ArtOfLicensing.com group on LinkedIn has reached the milestone mark of 2,000 members. This makes it the largest due-free online networking group for an international art licensing community.

Members including licensors (artists, illustrators, designers, and licensing agents), licensees (product manufacturers, producers, corporations) as well as supporting roles such as attorneys, technical professionals, and media members. Members also include many international art licensing professionals which promotes avenues of communication for cross-cultural ideas.

ArtOfLicensing.com also has a following on Twitter (Twitter.com/ArtOfLicensing) and Facebook (Groups.to/ArtOfLicensing) as well where members can dialogue about art licensing issues on their preferred social media platform. Through Twitter real-time feed of participating art licensing artists is also offered. Visitors can see a cross section of artists’ “tweet” updates that can be bookmarked in an RSS reader or enjoyed live on the Twitter platform (Twitter.com/ArtOfLicensing/art-licensing-artists).

The ArtOfLicensing.com group was founded in July 2008 by designer and art licensor Cherish Flieder (SomethingToCherish.com) as a way to bring those in the business of art licensing together in a supportive and coöperative format.

Members find LinkedIn’s platform easy to navigate and a natural extension of their individual LinkedIn profiles. Members exchange helpful ideas, news items, resources, report on trade shows, trends, and share information on marketing, copyrighting and licensing processes.

For information on participating in this group, please visit: ArtOfLicensing.com

My Art Licensing Story Video

Friday, March 12th, 2010

A short while back art licensing artist and educator Tara Reed encouraged us artists to make a video of our art licensing story to share on online. Now, I am a little camera shy, but decided to give that web cam a try after a little more prompting from Tara and my art licensing friend Jen Goode. I am also very blessed to have a husband and business partner, Benjamin Hummel who thought the idea of animating my fireflies would be a fun project. He stayed with his vision and directed and edited the whole thing for me. So in short, this fun little video came together and is now LIVE on my YouTube channel for your viewing pleasure.
