Mark’s Top 10 Proverbs of Freelancing

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

It is a privilege to be a part of such a creative community. The first creative organization I had the privilege of joining over a decade ago was the Colorado Alliance of Illustrators. It was a part of this group’s meetings and gallery shows  I eventually developed a respect and friendship with the talented illustrator and art licensor, Mark Bowers. Mark is a fellow Coloradoan artist who is celebrating his 10th anniversary as a freelancer after 16 years designing and illustrating at Current, Inc. To celebrate the occasion he wrote his “Top 10 Proverbs of Freelancing” of things he has learned along the way. He generously gave me permission to share them here with you.

“Top 10 Proverbs of Freelancing”

  1. When the client needs the work ASAP, he is really asking you to save the day. Do it and make him look great!
  2. Act like a business or you will look like a hobby.
  3. Your unique gifts are your unique solutions to the client’s unique problems.
  4. If you sell out on your values, the client won’t respect you in the morning.
  5. Persistence means to take longer than you thought and go through more obstacles than you imagined.
  6. Creativity embraces change. Change embraces creativity.
  7. Always start with a pencil and paper. If you start on the computer, your imagination will be stuck in a box.
  8. True success is rarely measured by the dollar, but seeking the dollar can provide immeasurable personal success.
  9. Perfect balance in life is difficult even for a scale. It’s ok, what is on it is always changing. Be glad about the right things on your scale and scrape off the dead weight.
  10. Be thankful to the One who gave you the talent and the guts to create something beautiful from nothing.

As I begin my eleventh year, I am looking forward to continued growth, and success in many different ways. I hope you are too. And if our paths should cross, may it be a pleasure to grow together.

My best to you,
Mark

Richert Shows a Half Century of Stunning Work

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

This Friday, our children’s book mid-show reception and book signing for Prayer Posies will be held at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in tandem with one of my college painting instructors, Clark Richert.

clark richert painting

For five decades, Clark Richert has explored the beauty of pattern and shape through his geometric compositions; founded innovative artist groups; and influenced generations of talent as a RMCAD faculty member and Head of the Painting Department. Now, more than 20 of his pieces from across those 50 years will be included in his new exhibition, Clark Richert: 1960s to Present.

This exhibition will represent the evolution of Clark’s long career as a painter and include a piece on loan from the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum, as well as a new projection piece. This will be a rare opportunity to see the scope of work from an artist who has been—and continues to be—one of the most optimistic and influential voices in the world of fine art.

Attend both the Opening Reception (this Friday the 5th) and the Gallery Talk (next Wednesday the 10th), to hear from this legendary painter, innovator and educator first-hand.

If you are in the Denver area, be sure to stop by to see these unique exhibits.

FrameChangers Media Company Information

After falling into the TV and Computer time-trap, creator and founder Jennifer Cybart needed to surround herself with encouraging words from the Bible in a new way!  The traditional scripture written on note cards got lost and her kids used her Bible as a coloring book.

Inspired to put God’s Word and digital devices together, Jennifer decided to create FrameChangers as scripture art for your TV, Computer, Digital Picture Frames, iPhone and iPod Touch.  There are collections to meet the needs of women, men and kids with verses and art targeted for each individual.

“Seeing God’s Word in an artistic way on digital devices is an emotional and memorable experience,” says Jennifer.  She recruited her engineer husband, Adam, to ensure the highest quality product and with the help of graphic designers, web developers, and many supportive friends, FrameChangers became a reality.

As for the name FrameChangers?  She credits divine inspiration.  God wants to change our frame of mind. (Romans 12:2)

~ Here’s to many renewed minds, one frame at a time.

Prayer Posies Childrens Book, CD & Note Card Set from PaintingForLife.com

About the artists:

Cherish Flieder and Benjamin Hummel are both dedicated to painting for life. Benjamin is a two-time liver transplant survivor who was among the first children to be transplanted for a rare auto immune system disorder affecting his liver. Cherish grew up in a large family where her parents and grandparents helped to raise many special needs foster children and adopted several of them as well. Every day has challenges of its own, but this couple looks for ways to celebrate the good things in life in spite of all difficulties.

Cherish and Benjamin met at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and later married with the hope to use their artist abilities to enhance the lives of others around them. This native Colorado team illustrates children’s books as well as designs a line of art, cards, limited edition prints and other gift products with their brand at PaintingForLife.com.
