Prayer Posies Childrens Book, CD & Note Card Set from PaintingForLife.com

About the artists:

Cherish Flieder and Benjamin Hummel are both dedicated to painting for life. Benjamin is a two-time liver transplant survivor who was among the first children to be transplanted for a rare auto immune system disorder affecting his liver. Cherish grew up in a large family where her parents and grandparents helped to raise many special needs foster children and adopted several of them as well. Every day has challenges of its own, but this couple looks for ways to celebrate the good things in life in spite of all difficulties.

Cherish and Benjamin met at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and later married with the hope to use their artist abilities to enhance the lives of others around them. This native Colorado team illustrates children’s books as well as designs a line of art, cards, limited edition prints and other gift products with their brand at PaintingForLife.com.

Color Trends Toolbar: my gift to you

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

As a designer, you know that there are probably millions of  ways to arrange color palettes. Our environment is continually informing us of colors that best represent a slice of our humanity at any particular time. Technology, current events and philosophical beliefs are just some things that move and shape our color trends.

Since following color trends is an ever changing, organic and creative process, there will never be one definitive resource on the matter. However, designers and manufacturers must stay on top of these patterns, to incorporate them, to respond to them or at least, just to be aware of them.

In my efforts to stay on top of this ever changing and inspiring world of color, I have created a handy color trends toolbar to include quick and easy links to some of my favorite sites on COLOR.

5 Reasons I Love Art Licensing

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

With Valentines’ day coming up and love in the air, I thought I would take some inspiration from my art licensing friend and mentor Tara Reed and write about why I love art licensing. So here we go. . .

1. I love the process of product development. It is a thrill to start with an idea or image, expand it, grow it and refine it until it becomes something new and different. Figuring out how to present and market a new product concept is an exciting puzzle to piece together.

2. I love alternating between the fast pace deadlines and long hours painting new art licensing collections in my studio, while listening to music that inspires creation. Being able to set my own schedule and follow my dreams is a major plus to running my own design studio.

3. I love creating designs and color combinations that will impact and inspire others that eventually find them at retail. Reaching into and touching strangers lives with love and hope is a pure delight.

4. It is an incredible feeling to wake up every morning, knowing you are your own boss. I have an incredible sense of passion and purpose for a specific vision for my brand, “Something to Cherish.” I love being able to earn a living creating, painting and designing images and graphics that solve problems and meet needs for the companies with whom I choose to work.

5. And most of all it is the wonderful plethora of people I meet along the way. It is the art directors and designers and fellow artists I am privileged to know and work with. They inspire me to be better, to reach for new heights and are a complete joy to collaborate with, even on the most challenging projects.

Just One More Book

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

With SO much happening everyday in the children’s publishing area, it can be very difficult to stay on top of things. Andra from Just One More Book just sent me this cool children’s book resource. I hope you find this as interesting and educational as I did. . .www.JustOneMoreBook.com

“A podcast about the children’s books we love and why we love them — recorded in our favourite coffee shop”

“Just One More Book!” is a thrice-weekly podcast, which promotes and celebrates literacy and great children’s books. Each weekday morning, we take a few minutes out of our morning coffee ritual to discuss one of our many favourite children’s books. We also feature weekly interviews with authors, illustrators and experts and enthusiasts in the areas of children’s literature and literacy as well as listener-submitted book reviews.

Through this podcast and website, we are building a lively, interactive community linking children’s book authors, illustrators, readers (parents, children, librarians, teachers and literacy activists) and publishers.

Guests have included celebrity authors such as Sheree Fitch, Rachna Gilmore, Jack Prelutsky, Daniel Pinkwater, Eve Bunting, Eva Ibbotson, Henry Winkler and Mary Ann Hoberman. They have also aimed the spotlight at interesting and lesser known and illustrators.

Episodes range in length from 5 to 25 minutes and can be played directly from our web page or downloaded to a portable mp3 player, such as an iPod, for listening on the go.

This podcast is powered by passion. They have no advertisers or sponsors. Their goals are to link children with great books and to help create happy memories for children and the adults that read to them…and to have fun!

The Just One More Book! Podcast has been recommended by the American Library Association as one of its 2007 American Library Association (ALA) – Great web sites for kids and has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine and such prestigious literary publications as School Library Journal, Books for Keeps and Publishers Weekly. We are also regular contributors to ChildsLife, The Edge of the Forest and Parent Source online newsletters.
