Embroidered Paintings byt Cherish Flieder & Benjamin Hummel - Children's Book Art ShowReception with a Colorado children’s book artist team

Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design’s Alumni art exhibit features painted illustrations with hand embroidery by husband and wife art team Benjamin Hummel and Cherish Flieder. Prayer Posies Childrens Book, CD & Note Card Set from PaintingForLife.com

About the artists:

Cherish Flieder and Benjamin Hummel are both dedicated to painting for life. Benjamin is a two-time liver transplant survivor who was among the first children to be transplanted for a rare auto immune system disorder affecting his liver. Cherish grew up in a large family where her parents and grandparents helped to raise many special needs foster children and adopted several of them as well. Every day has challenges of its own, but this couple looks for ways to celebrate the good things in life in spite of all difficulties.

Cherish and Benjamin met at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and later married with the hope to use their artist abilities to enhance the lives of others around them. This native Colorado team illustrates children’s books as well as designs a line of art, cards, limited edition prints and other gift products with their brand at PaintingForLife.com.

James Gurney: Illustration Dinotopia

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Recently I had the distinct pleasure of meeting James Gurney along with several art licensing and children’s book illustration friends. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps the name Dinotopia will. James Gurney is the multiple award winning author, illustrator behind this best selling book series which has circulated the globe as well as many spin-off opportunities.

We met James Gurney at the Denver Botanic Gardens for a lecture on his creative process as it relates to the world of Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara.

As you probably know, I teach adjunct illustration classes at the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design. I don’t know how many people were there to get their book signed, I just know I was at the end of the line. I had the honor to have my copy not only signed, but also sketched upon. I asked James if he would consider coming back to Colorado to present to the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design as well as the local chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators. I feel very blessed that everything was able to work out for Mr. Gurney to fit these lectures into his visit this September 17-20, 2009. We look forward to seeing him again!

Color Trends Toolbar: my gift to you

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

As a designer, you know that there are probably millions of  ways to arrange color palettes. Our environment is continually informing us of colors that best represent a slice of our humanity at any particular time. Technology, current events and philosophical beliefs are just some things that move and shape our color trends.

Since following color trends is an ever changing, organic and creative process, there will never be one definitive resource on the matter. However, designers and manufacturers must stay on top of these patterns, to incorporate them, to respond to them or at least, just to be aware of them.

In my efforts to stay on top of this ever changing and inspiring world of color, I have created a handy color trends toolbar to include quick and easy links to some of my favorite sites on COLOR.
