*5 things that really inspire you*

  1. Relationships — family, friends, clients & students
  2. Color
  3. Exploring nature
  4. Traveling to new and old places
  5. Music

*5 things we might not know about you that you’d like to share*

  1. I am married to an awesome guy, Benjamin Hummel, who survived not one but TWO liver transplants when he was a teenager due to an auto immune disorder that he was born with. He is an artist, too. I am so lucky to have him in my life. You can see some of his work at www.Painting for Life.com.
  2. During the summer of 2008 I had my first rib removed (the one under my left clavicle) since it was damaged in a car accident (I was not at fault). The dislocated rib caused a huge clot in my left arm several hundred blot clots broke off and passed through my heart and into my lungs. I am EXCEPTIONALLY grateful to God that I am still alive and back in the studio making new art!
  3. I wake up almost every morning with a purring cat on my good shoulder. Her name is Lady Guinevere (Gwinny for short), my little sister named her after she was rescued as a kitten from the streets of Kansas.
  4. To read the last two items, visit the article that CraftForHealth.com just posted HERE.

*5 things going on in your creative world*

  1. I am learning Corel Painter for the 3rd time since its release. I am really excited about the watercolor brushes. Thinking about some hybrid art making possibilities.
  2. I will be exhibiting at CHA for the 3rd year in the License & Design section in Anaheim, CA. My lightbox it stacked with a ton of ideas and paintings for new watercolor embroidery art licensing collections.
  3. Also, as a part of CHA 2010 I am participating in the crafting around the world exhibit and will share art inspired by Sweden.
  4. Our studio is also working on some new digital art products for computers and the iPhone with a new licensing partner … stayed tuned for details.
  5. Oh, and did I mention that my husband and I are also excited to share our collection of Christmas cards? You can check those out and sign up for a friends only e-mail update list at www.PaintingForLife.com.

5 Reasons I Love Art Licensing

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

With Valentines’ day coming up and love in the air, I thought I would take some inspiration from my art licensing friend and mentor Tara Reed and write about why I love art licensing. So here we go…

1. I love the process of product development. It is a thrill to start with an idea or image, expand it, grow it and refine it until it becomes something new and different. Figuring out how to present and market a new product concept is an exciting puzzle to piece together.

2. I love alternating between the fast pace deadlines and long hours painting new art licensing collections in my studio, while listening to music that inspires creation. Being able to set my own schedule and follow my dreams is a major plus to running my own design studio.

3. I love creating designs and color combinations that will impact and inspire others that eventually find them at retail. Reaching into and touching strangers lives with love and hope is a pure delight.

4. It is an incredible feeling to wake up every morning, knowing you are your own boss. I have an incredible sense of passion and purpose for a specific vision for my brand, “Something to Cherish.” I love being able to earn a living creating, painting and designing images and graphics that solve problems and meet needs for the companies with whom I choose to work.

5. And most of all it is the wonderful plethora of people I meet along the way. It is the art directors and designers and fellow artists I am privileged to know and work with. They inspire me to be better, to reach for new heights and are a complete joy to collaborate with, even on the most challenging projects.

Twitters to Cherish

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

I have been reading article after article lately on how Twitter can help promote and manage a business. At first I thought to myself, “how can anyone REALLY be doing anything when they have to type everything they do on Twitter?” The point of this micro-blogging site is to keep each other updated on a play-by-play level, am I right? Who has time for that?

But, after a few more articles, webinars and seeing Twitter links on many of my artist’s friends sites, I threw caution to the wind and I decided to give it a try.

It didn’t take me long to realize that if I said I was “working on a painting of xyz,” someone might ask about it later. So, in my warped, task achieving, type ‘A’ personality mind, Twitter transformed itself into this this really cool accountability for the tasks I need to get done And at the SAME TIME it keep me updated, on task while sharing with my “followers” stuff from my life. I don’t write most things on there, that WOULD be overkill, and I really wouldn’t accomplish anything, but I do try to include some highlight of the day and interact with other Twittters, too!

I am finding that everyone has their own approach to the types of entries that they share. The best thing for me, is that I can see what other artists around the world, friends, family member, and successful professionals are doing. My art licensing friend, Tara Reed, who wrote an excellent free e-book on Twitter, refers to Twitter as her “virtual office.” What a great way to stay in touch! I am realizing that we all lead the most interesting lives which further fuels the fire for what we do.

I don’t know if it has helped business yet, but I realize that building a brand takes a long time, so until I find out I guess I will be posting about it one tweet at a time.
