5 Ways to Create a Home That Shows off Your Fashion Sense

Guest post by Bryn Huntpalmer

Home is where the heart is, which is why decorating should be a personal experience that helps you tell your story and show off your fashion sense. This helps ensure that every moment you spend at home feels cozy, safe, and familiar, and it helps to set your place apart from any others out there. Here are a few of Modernize’s favorite ideas for creating a home that shows off your fashion sense.

1. Create a Patchwork Wall Tapestry

A fun way to decorate with fashion in mind and to commemorate memories from days past is to create a patchwork wall tapestry made up of your favorite old pieces of clothing and photos of yourself in outfits, dresses, and costumes that you appreciate. Have the photos printed on patches of your old clothes or buy new material to cut up and have the photos printed on, then sew the patches of material together to create on large wall tapestry. It’s a perfect piece of art for the bedroom!

2. Spice Things up With Jewelry

Hanging fashion jewelry or favorite vintage pieces is an awesome way to add some depth to a space and create a sophisticated look. Choose some decorative hooks from your local home improvement store and strategically install them on your walls, and then simply hang unique necklaces, bracelets, and hair pieces on them. You can also hang pins and earrings on the wall by stringing them with gold chains or pretty ribbon.

3. Turn Your Fashion Pieces into Art

Another interesting option is using Plexiglas boxes to enclose cool shoes, belts, bags, and other fashion accessories, which will instantly create artwork that can be displayed on shelves, end tables, and on the floor near entrances. Spray each piece you choose to display with weatherproof coating for moisture and mold protection to maximize longevity.

4. Transform Shirts into Throw Pillows

You can add bold color and style to your space by turning a couple of old T-shirts into throw pillows for the room’s seating. This is easy to do by filling fashionable shirts with batting from the arts and crafts store, and then sewing the openings of the shirts closed so the batting doesn’t escape. At this point, it’s just a matter of throwing them on the couch, loveseat, or chair in your favorite room.

5. Use Inspiration for Decoration

If you don’t have any personal fashion pieces to use for décor, consider pulling out some magazines and cutting out pieces that inspire you to stay fit, healthy, and happy. Use the cutouts as artwork by placing them in picture frames to hang on the walls and display on various tables. Keep things interesting by framing full-size photos and collages of smaller photos that each feature a similar theme. You can create themes for each room in your home. For example, frame photos of fancy pajamas and beautiful lingerie for the bathroom, or incorporate depictions of aprons and gardening hats for the kitchen.

Take your time creating these projects and focus on your intent as you plan and execute them. You’ll find that the energy and work you put forth is well worth the effort as you enjoy your personalized décor in the years to come.
